Legendary Creations: Italy’s Contribution to High-Tech Industry

Olivetti typewriters and computers, Maserati, Lamborghini and Ferrari cars, Ducati motorcycles, Piaggio scooters, fabrics produced by Ermenegildo Zegna and Loro Piana, and footwear and accessories by Tod’s are just a few examples of how, since the last century, Italy has contributed to the high‑technology sector. What explains this successful inventiveness? The course will focus on the industrial history of Italy with the aim of understanding the uniqueness of “Made in Italy.” Among the reasons behind Italy’s industrial and technological creativity are its ability to combine tradition and innovation, its longstanding excellence in craftsmanship, and the role played by economic districts, which have effectively engaged stakeholders in this process and addressed local development in innovative ways. The course will also examine current challenges related to globalization.
